UNcommon Sense
The Ramblings of a Renegade Psychotherapist

Chapter 1
A Genesis Has to Start Somewhere:

I will be exposing you thoroughly to Errolism, which I define as original thought (of which, according to Errolism, there is no such thing). I will also be exposing you to insights and ideas from other beliefs, philosophies, cultures and religions, but not with any desire to proselytize.

I do not wholly embrace any body of belief or religion other than my own (which changes daily anyhow). All people, cultures and religions contain wisdom and beauty; to appreciate that diversity creates a global community that works. Bear in mind that you do not have to do anything - Errolism demands nothing of you. However, if you choose to improve your life by allowing my world view to compel thought into action, you can expect positive results.

What was your first reaction to reading the term "Errolism"? Did it conjure up an image of a pompous, narcissistic ass? Good. Now lay that notion aside for a moment and listen:

I give my world view the name "Errolism" neither as a label nor to establish a new religion. We have enough religions. We also have enough labels: Christian, Catholic, Jew, Protestant, atheist, Muslim, Hindu, black, white, Oriental, American, European etc. and so on. These are generic titles you inherited at birth as a package deal or, in some instances, adopted later on. All of you have your own personal religion. It reflects the way you see your world and operate within it. Errolism is my own world view, because it is mine. It has been developing throughout my life as I read, explore, observe, ask questions, challenge concepts and experiment to discover what works and what doesn’t. Your world view is your own, whatever you entitle it.

I was willing to leave the comfort of my so-called "community" and my label. I choose now to consider my community the world and my label as "human being". Errolism seeks not to draw conclusions but to make observations. Its ultimate, number-one commandment: Take full responsibility for your life. Keep in mind that to embrace Errolism is not necessarily to believe all its tenets. It is necessary that you believe in your duty, your responsibility, to find out what your beliefs are and why you believe them, and then go ahead and live them. By the way, Errolism allows you the privilege of contradicting yourself as often as you need to. I always do. Well, not always.

Suggestions for the proper approach to Uncommon Sense:

1. Don't rush to judgement. These writings are not meant to be believed, but to provoke you to ask questions you've never asked before. Thinking is a lost art. I aim to revive it.

2. Surrender all firearms until the feelings pass. When you encounter something that challenges or contradicts your world view, the natural response is anger. Let it happen, let it go, and then continue to explore.

3. Read each chapter more than once. Different headspaces, different times, and different environments, among other things, will affect your receptiveness. Try various combinations and see how it works.

4. Don’t read on a full stomach. If you’re too happy, you won’t get it. Don’t read on an empty stomach, either. Nausea has been known to occur. Like the anger, let it pass, and then go on.

5. Write down what inspires or offends you the most. Both are helpful. Both cause you to expand your world. Inspiration allows you surpass the current boundaries of your experience. Taking offense commonly derives from the demons you seek to excise from your life.

6. Be ready to accept total paradigm shift. Truth is an ever-evolving process. Enough said?

7. Reread suggestions 1-6. If you’re already offended, work on this page for now.
